The passing of Tazio Nuvolari on August 11, 1953, shocked the world and deeply moved the men behind the Mille Miglia: Renzo Castagneto, Aymo Maggi, and Giovanni Canestrini. These three, along with Franco Mazzotti (who died during World War II), had conceived and created the "most beautiful race in the world.

Castagneto, the mastermind behind the Mille Miglia, and his friends were deeply connected to the Mantuan driver, not just because of their affection and respect for him as a man and champion, but also due to their gratitude for his pivotal role in the growth of their race through his remarkable feats.

To honor his memory, the organizers of the Mille Miglia modified the traditional route to pass through Mantua. Since then, the Gran Premio Nuvolari was established, to be awarded to the fastest driver and thus to be held on the long straights that run through the Po Valley, starting from Cremona and passing through Mantua, all the way to the finish line in Brescia.
